Tonight I arrive just after 5 a.m. from a pow wow in murky NW with the team photographer for the Washington Wizards to a TV news report dictated to a sleeping roommate on a couch across the apartment about “over one hundred protests across the country” today by embattled student debtors. Many arrests.

The newsman has a British accent, and I suspect the network is BBC (though I can’t see the TV from where I sit). I wonder how much coverage today’s demonstrations carried on domestic network TV news?

Today I was going to buy a camera tripod in order to to enhance my nighttime photography in the city. Instead last night I bought three glass tobacco pipes in order to sell two at a margin large enough to pay for the third, and also the tripod I’ve put off buying for the last time.

A friend who quit smoking weed for Lent gifted me her remaining stash last week which I smoked streetside tonight en route to meet friends at a bar called Roxanne’s in Adams Morgan.

Streetside a wandering hippie chick asked me if I knew where she could find weed. Fingering the roach in my pocket I asked, “Are you a cop?”

“That’s one of the funniest questions I get asked out here…” she replied, which didn’t answer my question, and so I asked her again: “Well…are you a cop?”

“No,” the hippie chick replied.

“Well, here…Happy Friday,” I said, handing her the roach from my pocket.

Her mood immediately improved. She asked me my name and (I think) hoped to shake my hand (or fist-bump, etc.) but I was already on the move into Adams Morgan on what became another fine evening in our nation’s capitol.

So I was about to recommend Claire McCaskill — my Senator from Missouri — under Tumblr “politics” category. But when I read Tumblr’s notice about these things —

clairecmc is a blog focused on politics and I understand that if it blatantly isn’t, my account may be suspended. :(

…I thought better of it, as Mrs. McCaskill’s tumblelog is not blatantly focused on “politics”, but instead falls somewhere between “politics” and “personalities” — and a blog can only be recommended in a single category.

There were several congresspersons at Hawk ‘n’ Dove two nights ago, but only one of them sat alone. Congressman Anthony Weiner ordered a Budweiser alone at the bar, and a three soft tacos. He shot the shit with Edgar Gutierez, the main bartender, whom the congressman from Manhattan knows by name and has for some time. Congressman Weiner is one of Edgar’s regulars.

Later I showed Edgar a CSPAN video of Weiner on YouTube. He looked it up and was enchanted by it, an extremely rare reaction to the national political scene from behind the bar the Washington Post has called “the best place to talk politics”. Like many District of Columbians, Edgar is callous to national politics, like a smoker to federally mandated warning lables under the celophane in packs of Marlboro Lights.

“He’s a good tipper,” says Guitierez. Thus, Weiner passes the ultimate test of character in the American gratuity system. Also, it doesn’t hurt that Weiner is often on the cable news shows, and does a helluva job on CSPAN.
